Nintendo could seal the NX's success on an awesome home/portable version of Pokemon. If it allows you to pick up right where you saved whether at home or on the go (seamless) it would be huge.
I see 2016 to be a great year for all consoles. Up to this point, Wii U has been awesome in exclusives (most fun, quality exclusives IMO). While PS4 and Xbox have been severely overrated in exclusives but ok in third party games. But Zelda (can't wait, strong potential GOTY), Uncharted 4 (will be absolutely huge in sales, potential GOTY) and whatever game releases (Gears or Quantum Break??) make it out on Xbox should deliver an excellent, quality 2016.
Nintendo knows how to design awesome games with great controls. This won't be any different.
That is what I actually think it will be. Physical buttons (all the ones needed) with a seamless touchscreen on top. That would be awesome. Basically a more powerful, higher resolution, better shaped Wii U controller.
I think it will have physical buttons if the console will retail for $299.
Like someone else said, this only seems like an option either bundled or sold alone as maybe a handheld concept that could work with the NX. That would seem like $399 to $499 territory to me.
All being said the shape of the controller seems comfortable. This cannot be taken as the final design by anyone who has seen patent concept to actual product in the past from Nintendo.

I am thankful for the grace of God, my family, friends and good health! I am also thankful for the game developers who take so much of their time away from their families to bring us awesome games. RIP to the ones we lost in the gaming industry this year (Mr. Iwata you are missed). Happy holidays and I look forward to 2016.
Can't wait for both Zelda's in 2016. Wii U is a solid console with awesome games. May not have a huge library but what it here is actually good! And I think Nintendo doesn't want it to pass Gamecube..at least not easy...because they refuse to drop the price. If it were $199 (bundled with MK8 or Splatoon), it would be selling triple what it is selling now.
Wii U deserves to sell at least 20 million. It's a well made console with awesome software. Hopefully Zelda stays exclusive for a bit. Wii U should be around 13 million ...

You bring up a lot of valid points. The NX, IMO is a smart decision. You do NOT want to be left behind an entire generation. Kids would grow up on an entirely different brand with no other option and most likely stay loyal.
PS4 has not released or announced so many games and gems. Like a new Gran Turismo or Grand Theft Auto. Those games take years to come out after they are even announced. I can see PS4 going well into 2021 now. PS5 might be announced before then who knows. ...
There are many games that are not even announced for PS4 yet. Like a new Gran Turismo or Grand Theft Auto. And we ALL know how long they both take. I can see PS4 going to 2020-21 now. So Nintendo would be wise to release NX by next Holiday.

Super Mario Sunshine!!! I REALLY need it. It's the only 3D Mario I don't own. I used to own it but was dumb to sell a decade back. A HD Remake would be even better!
