Manually hitting them takes more skill and is more satisfying to me personally. You only needed like 2 hits with it most of the time in Killzone 2.
An animation is more generic to me. When you're hitting someone in 2, you still gotta be accurate with your hits. Forces you to really work on using both sticks well; having to press them in to run and attack, in addition to pushing them in the right direction. Smacking them with the gun is more satisfying. They should've left the 1 hit kill stuff for single player.

This game should've been canceled the day the fans made that 3D Sonic remix. It's a step backwards from the classic Sonic, that's unnacceptable. This game can burn in hell.
