I remember playing this game ages ago and thinking, "What the hell, this is NOTHING like Chrono Trigger." I think I found the HUGE roster of characters overwhelming.

I checked your mage's gear score on EU Armory --he's walking around in really, really, really, really low level greens and blues. Like really low. I'm not surprised he's having trouble with Cataclysm --the mobs are tougher, the pulls are harder --frankly, I'm pretty impressed he was able to hit 80 at all with what he has.

However, I don't believe I said that Naughty Dog has creative control. I was just taking that one interview and implying that at least they're keeping an eye on the project which (I believe) is more than can be said about some of the other video game movies made recently.
That's the problem with hype --some people are always bound to be disappointed. At the end of the day though, it boils down to what makes YOU happy. No reviewer (and let's be honest, they're a dime a dozen) shouldn't tell you how you should feel about something YOU'RE paying for.
The movie was pretty decent --not sure why the game sucks so much.

Don't get me wrong --I didn't DISLIKE Metro 2033 and MAG. I just expected more from them and didn't feel as though they fully delivered on the hype. Hype is a double edged sword that way --it generates interest, but it also raises expectations.
