Saying Halo saved Xbox would be like saying Gran Turismo saved PS3. Just because its the highest selling exclusive -which Halo isn't- doesn't mean there isn't other high selling exclusives regardless of how tired the franchise is.
Braid was hardly mediocre. Granted it had a basic art style but the rewind ability was implemented so brilliantly its safe to say its not mediocre.
