I don't think anyone is really saying it's a rip off. It's just way too expensive for the mass market, and that's before you factor in the price of the hardware you may need to use it.
Technically it's 'ripoff' is in it's value. I reckon the manufacturing cost of each rift is higher than say an iphone. (actually i'm sure of it) But an iphone, for 600 bucks, get's you daily multiple hours of usage for years (potentially).
