Gaming companies/manufacturers come and go. Gaming itself will never die. So no, Sony doesn't need the xbone to succeed. Sony needs to do what they have been doing, producing powerful consoles and attracting the best developers on the planet to produce the best games for the system. If there is no next console cycle, or only one more console cycle, it will be because gaming and technology evolves, not because these companies did something wrong.
If they want freedom, all they have to do is sign with Sony. Sony gives their first parties all the freedom and support and let them create. If they go indie, Sony will welcome them with open arms as well.
Ready at Dawn delivered exactly what they said they would with that late 2013 trailer, when they said the trailer was in engine. Amazing. Now compare what Sony devs are doing compared to the smoke, mirrors, high end pc highjinks, and clouudddzzz that Microsoft uses, and there is no contest. PS4. Everything other console is just a compromise.

Does a full hd 1080p tv have to focus on being full hd? No, it simply is it's natural state. 1080p appears to be the ps4's natural state, so there is no "focus", as you say, being put on it. It just appears to be the norm and not stressing the system at all to achieve, unlike the other guy's console.

Getting older has curtailed my gaming at times, life gets in the way. Like you said, the sessions til 3 or 4 in the morning stopped for me years ago. That is why I hardly touch multiplayer anymore. It's just too much time spent ranking up, leveling up, to get some perk or attachment that I don't have the time to grind away to get. Agree with your ME2 assessment. Vehemently disagree with your ME3 assessment. I loved the gameplay elements of ME3. For ME4, I hope they return to the exploration and top notch storytelling of ME1.
I don't think ND will want to get stuck in that cycle of making sequels. Uncharted is next from one of their teams, why would they want to follow that up with yet another sequel? I don't think they will. They will want to bring something new to the ps4 to expand their reach, and create another monster franchise. Then they could return to TLOU later in the ps4's life cycle.
Uhhhh...archangelmike..Sonys greatness lies in them giving their developers freedom to experiment and not meddle, letting the creative people be creative. That is how a game like The Last of Us got greenlit in the first place. Sony doesn't tell ND what to do, they simply ask what they need and get out of the way. And we gamers have benefited from that greatly. If ND chooses to make TLOU next, or they take a break from that title and bring something new, it will be their decision alone...
I'm thinking Titanfall will putter out pretty quickly considering all the hype following last years E3. Almost everything they have recently revealed feels like a compromise. It's 2014, why are we still compromising on "next gen" consoles?
