yea, all the printed media books are fleshing out the storyline, and those are canon. We have seen plots spin off from the books/manga and reintroduced into the game itself.
For instance, Trag Highmountain only existed in the Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy and the Warcraft Legends mangas.

Blizzard is planning something big. There's no doubt the new cataclysm will originate from the Emerald Dream's Nightmare into the physical world. The old gods are behind that.
On the other hand, we know now of the forming of a new Council of Tirisfal. All these characters might appear in the expansion. At least Vindicator Maraad is already in Icecrown aboard the Alliance Gunship. He's Garona's uncle and a member of the new Council of Tirisfal.
