Actually this article turned out to be pretty fair. And the level they created looked like fun. It's always hilarious seeing those sackboys hanging on for dear life to a rocket propelled skateboard.

I disagree. I think graphics help the immersion factor of the gamer into the games that are trying to imitate realism. Gran Turismo is a great example.
Tetris on the other hand doesn't matter because it's a puzzle game that isn't trying to imitate reality.
I'm not saying that Gears 2 is 1.5 or not. However the mere fact that Cliff has to address the conception in the first place is bad for Gears 2. No one is asking Insomniac whether Resistance 2 is 1.5. Or Guerilla with Killzone 2.
Bungie had the same problem with Halo 3 some were calling it 2.5.

They are nearing the hardware threshold and that developers are going to have to use software tricks to make games look better.
That's going to take a lot of processing power to generate those maps.
On the surface Kotaku looks like a reputable gaming site.
These guys kill me like Marcus and Dom from Gears with all that bulky body armor on but no head gear. They're better off running around in a loincloth like Tarzan.
