Maybe they saw how Alone in the Dark got accepted and decided to go back to the drawing board.
I think the problem is that there are so many new games and the economy has slowed down. If you can get a taste of what the game feels like without having to pay anything some people feel like that taste is enough. They usually move onto anticipating the next new big thing.
Video games titles themselves need to drop in price. It's simple supply and demand. Lots of titles (supply) versus limited budgets for gamers (demand) equals lower sales.

The Japanese gamers like some weird stuff. Of course I'm sure they say the same about Western gamers.
I understand why they're doing it because in reality they don't need to release a demo at all like Gears or GTA.
After bringing out Killzone and later on GT5 I think Sony can feel pretty confident that whatever "secret" exclusives the 360 has coming out they won't be graphically near what Sony has to offer.
