Not sure about that, MS did state that SE approached them with this deal. Could be they did not want to go head to head with UC4. Although that would be surprising as UC4 does not yet have a confirmed release day. Pure speculation though.
@BitbyDeath
That does not really matter, Even MS has not stated they did not pay, but they had an agreement. Being a Japanese game does not really make sense for them to restrict the game to one platform same goes for RoTR. It's obvious Sony paid for the exclusive at the time. Same goes for MGS4, Kojima stated that the data in the game is to enormous, but yet they still are making MGS5 for 360.
Most likely, they were looking for security or additional funding and if UC4 releases on the same time as RoTR on PS4 UC4 would demolish it because it's an exclusive. Just speculating but it seems to me that the reason they went to MS with the offer was competition with UC4.
I think he meant that was one of the reason. Main reason he provides that SE came to them with this opportunity and they couldn't pass on it.
@BitbyDeath
No problem, It's been ten years could not find much on the situation, but considering the SC games prior to Soul Calibur 3 were multiplatform, then this was a lifetime exclusive on PS2, it's pretty clear Sony bought exclusive rights.

Naughty Dog are Great but Sony do have many talented studios, sometimes i think they get overshadowed by ND. For me ND are definitely not the only reason.
You realise Sony had done this type of deal, way before MS did? No matter who does this, it's a horrible practice.
Well, you still can't overlook Sony from doing this, they have done it before, they may do it again (SoulCalibur III). though with all this backlash i think this would be the last deal we see, hopefully.
Damn, that looks scary..... and awesome.
Same here, but i really prefer disc over digital. Though the white really looks pretty awesome.
I doubt that, reading through the whole interview, he was certainly being very open and honest about it. I'm getting a feeling Sony sort of were involved in this deal, as stated by Phil that SE came to MS with this offer, Could be Sony bidded for the exclusivity first and SE went to MS for a better offer. I would not been surprised if Sony did this, they did the same thing with SoulCalibur 3 for the PS2.
This is all speculation on y account but it sure seems like that to ...
So Square Enix gave them this opportunity and MS just went forward with it. It also seems like Sony may have been interested in the deal, as Phil stated that they were not the only ones who could of closed the deal.
Not only MS, Sony did this with SoulCalibur 3, making it a lifetime exclusive on PS2.
I think he was referring to PC.
"I'll just put it this way: other people could have done this deal. There was nothing about us that said, we were the only people would could do this deal. If another publisher, another platform wanted to go do this deal, it's a business deal. There's nothing we did somebody else could not have done"
Is he indicating that, someone else was also bidding for the exclusivity?
Is this not the Dev's choice? considering if the game is already being ported or still in development.
Lol, to be fair i am a programmer, although still in the learning phase. I already launched a game on Android (Courage ball), point is i know how to code. The reason i called these guys lazy is because, there are plenty of devs whom are smaller and yet can get better results than HB got. Considering the fact that this game is definitely not graphically demanding. They got the minimum result of 720p and 60fps, instead of going the extra mile they decided to let it be, probably because they we...
That is some lazy development.
Well hopefully they can find talent which can bring out the long gone best of Rare. Good thing is they've started on a new project.
I still need to get sold on this game, maybe i could play at EGX. Graphically it looks stunning and the premise seems interesting.
