MS hasn't stopped supporting the XBox. But I understand what you mean. I can't agree more. PS3 will be haxxed and then Sony will feel the wrath MS did last gen and Sega DC before it. I really doubt that like you say they can give you this much freedom and in a LINUX OS not get hacked and suffer the consequences. The reason it is important is because the factories cannot begin producing them until they are finalized designs that meet all the international specifications for electronic devices and until they work. They they can start producing then they can launch.

With the yield issues we have heard, factory problems, supplying worldwide launch... the numbers they gave at e3 06 are pitiful for trying to catch up to MS with at least a 8 million console headstart. but in like a year or so yes SOny will hit their stride and they will be cranking them out. We are jaded loves of console gaming here. Hardcore fans. Of course we will have ours...

I dont think it is obvious at all. Nobody said they are going to change the outward appearance of the system at all... miniturization will save them money on the parts of the system that are costly to them.
Ps2 is a thing of the past... there will be less and less games for it as Sony tris to recoup the massive money it spent on the PS3. Sure there are 1000 million of them outthere somewhere but you know what there are tons of PSones still out there somewhere and ataris and etc...
