all the consumer focus was on drm and console price and appearance....any new game announcements would probably have been lost/diluted in the shuffle.

Same here, i have a herculean backlog...i can check next gen at the end when stuff is cheap. i dont go for multiplayer either..so no worries

Microsoft has been stepping down their gaming focus for a while now. Also, it was always known that the xbox was a trojan horse for them to eventually deliver media content to the living room.
