Indeed. Mario is the series of all series that changes the most with each iteration.
Its went from 2D platform(with all of the variation within), to racing, golf, the olypics.
Yet series like Gran Turismo, God of War and Halo which are literally identical game after game bar a few upgrades here and there get no criticism.

The hardware is dx11 compatible with GPGPU technology. Its quite modern.
Iwata does not program the software for the Wii U or for anything. Updates come out for the OS when the people who make them are done and what they add is their decision, not something on an obligatory list.
