The original ending would work because the whole plot is unraveled within a few pages of the last chapter. The whole blaming Dr. Manhatten doesn't work because he WAS an American scientist turned into a doomsday device by Nixon. By blaming Dr. Manhatten they are blaming America, which would not halt the nuclear holocaust. The original plot was to create something beyond this world (Alien) that could ultimately end humanity if we did not unite.

If you actually read the graphic novel then you'd know that the movie is not faithful at all. It's basically 3 hrs. of Zack Synder trying to be cool and gratuitous like Paul Verhoeven, but ultimately fails miserably.
Ex. Silk Spectre (worst actress ever) stabbing a guy in the throat with a dagger. Dr. Manhatten being empathetic throughout the whole film (complete opposite of the character). OZY. WHOLE PLOT TO UNITE THE WORLD completely scrapped for a nonsensical substitute.
