Perception is a very difficult thing to change, and the perception is that Nintendo is a kids toy company and is not meant for older gamers. That is why it's not popular.
Also, Nintendo is the only true 'hardcore' company out there. Outside of PC, it is the number 1 console for hardcore gamers. The majority of the people who purchase Microsoft and Sony systems are casuals who just want the new cool piece of tech. Additionally, Nintendo does not advertise themselve...

I really hope it actually gets pushed to next year, seeing as Xenoblade is looking more and more likely to finally be released this year. Just need actual confirmation. I don't have enough time in my day to juggle work, school, gaming, and everything else in life and still find time to play two massive JRPGs, especially ones with combat systems as complex and strategic as FFXV and XCX. I could definitely see this becoming a big time competitive esport. The potential for CoD level Splatoon tournaments is definitely there.
My understanding of the superweapon mechanic is that it is charged as you fire paint and, should you ever get splatted (killed), you lose that charge. Obviously, for balancing reasons, it is going to take a while to get that superweapon if all you're doing is painting the map. But it seems like that is what it's drawn from.
Have you played the first Xenoblade? Because if you haven't and are planning to pick up a Wii U to play the new one, I would recommend that you at least play it a little to get used to the combat. It'll give you a huge advantage going into Xenoblade Chronicles X, since the combat in XCX is an evolution of the combat in Xenoblade Chronicles. Maybe pick it up when the N3DS version releases.

XCX is moving up really fast. Just a few weeks ago it wasn't in the top ten, now it's at number 6. The Direct on Friday may just push it to the top three behind FFXV and Bravely Second.
Not to mention lack of Xenoblade. How is Ratchet and Clank a bigger release than all of the games we've mentioned?
Would be awesome, and to be honest it makes sense with what nintendo is planning to release this year. Hopefully they got this one right!!
