I was hoping for a sequel set a few centuries after the end of ME3, introducing new alien species, a new galactic threat, and new characters to bond with.

The Templar vs Assassin war have been going on since the end of the first Civ. But I understand that in real history, Templars and Assassin's came about during the Crusades.
