The cloud is basically servers (processors and HDD's) connected to each other that can be used for remote storage and processing. A PC or console can send or receive data from these servers or store or retrieve data.

Uses could be saving profiles or game saves or the games themselves and retrieving them on a different console.
Developers could store new game assets that are streamed to the player.

Current disc games that have become available as dd's are overpriced because publishers are still learning how to market these games. They will be adjusting prices down as they see that they aren't moving any units. And with the next gen, publishers may offer the DD versions of their games cheaper on day one than the disc. Or they may offer pre order bonuses only to the DD versions.

Also, games like State of Decay that skipped the disc and went straight to dd are e...

The only way to sell games cheaper is through digital download. There have been too many single player games this gen that were not worth $60 but were good games. The ability to dd these games day one would lower their price. Developers just need an install base that they know they can sell dd's to. MS is guaranteeing developers this install base.

I agree. I even support the 24 hour check because I don't really see it as DRM I see it as a message to buyers that this device requires online. This is MS's way of avoiding the problems caused with the 360's with and without HDDs and developers having to design for the lowest common denominator. With the One, developers are guaranteed that every user is connected and on line so they can make games that leverage cloud services.

I really see this check in requirement to be a marketing strategy. MS is using this to guarantee developers that they can leverage the on line and cloud services because every Xbox One will be connected. To me this is avoiding the problem created with the 360 and its with/without HDD options.
I think MS will announce in a couple of months when everything is quiet that the requirement has been extended to 48 hours or more.

How is it forced if you have alternatives? There must be a hundred articles around here and thousands of comments that the PS4 is so much better and has a long list of advantages. So why are so many people upset when they have an alternative that they are saying is so much better?

I 100% support the Xbox One requiring an internet connection. The reason is standardization! MS is guaranteeing the developers that everyone on their console is connected and online. Developers can make games for the One knowing that they will have no problem leveraging online and the cloud. MS is rightfully avoiding the same screw up they made with the 360 in having two models, one with and one without HDD's. No more telling developers that they have to design for the lowest common ...

I think publishers will try and combat used game sales with pre-order bonuses on digital downloads. MS said that all games will be downloadable on day one. So all a publisher has to do is throw more freebies at the down-loaders and there will be less disc in the world to trade!

I'm going to agree with Qwark on #3. Some people won't have many games to even trade in this next gen. Games will be available to download on day 1 now and there are a few advantages to DD.

Saving on gas driving to the store. I know people who travel an hour each way to pick up new releases. Money saved!
Games can be queued to download when released. No waiting till a store opens or staying up late to go to a midnight release. wake up in the morning and...

There are smart TV's coming with cams now and I doubt they will provide the security that the consoles will.

Also, nobody has seen the new system yet. Just because you have something plugged in doesn't mean it has to be activated. The current Kinect has settings to turn the sensor completely off or to just shut off the mic. As long as Kinect2 has settings to control what it does there is no need to run around and scream that the sky is falling.

I agree that the Universe is not the story but the Universe(actually that should be galaxy) has other stories it can tell. The next ME should do like Skyrim did when it advanced the Elder Scrolls story by a 150 years. A fresh start with just some hints of the past.

Ok, first, does MS really have reps that visit Gamestops? I just don't see the need for some rep running around visiting game stores.

Second, The 360 launched without Gears or Halo so I don't see this as a factor for the NextBox launch. New IP's would spark more interest and as long as there is a new COD, people will come running.

The problem yesterday was with signing in not the ability to stay on. All of my friends that got on early were able to keep on playing. Those of us trying to get on later could not. So the problem was with account authentication and signing on. I'm not saying this in support of MS or always-on but an always signed on console wouldn't have had this problem.

Neither MS or Sony have abandon games. They are both in the same boat. They must focus on multi media and muti purposes for their next generation of machines to survive. here's why.

Gaming is a tired media! The WOW factor is diminishing in gaming just like it did with the Web. Of course people still use the web and will still game but they won't be doing so at the feverish pitch that happened in the years previous. To get the masses to buy into to next gen their ...

So why do you think you need a fiber connection to make always-on work? If always on is for authentication then all you would need is dial up or it could be done with wireless. Any connection will do!

The whole argument that something won't work because everyone in the world doesn't have access is invalid. XBL launched when a lot of people had no broadband access and it survived! Services create demand for infrastructure and new tech.

@Godmars
No separate modem or router needed. I'm talking about direct connection like cable boxes are now. Coax cable straight to the console. Internally a console could have a cable/networking card that handles TV and internet. No modem no router less lag!

4717d ago 0 agree3 disagreeView comment

For over a year now I have thought that the next Xbox would be available from cable providers. And in one way I hope it happens.
You would eliminate a modem and a router from the set up. This would help to reduce latency. Now I can set up a router and modem to work correctly but a lot of people can't and don't. More gamers on direct connected units would mean less lag in MP games.

An always on, direct connected console appeals to me. I could start enjo...

My question is what happens to Game Fly if either console adopts blocking used games? Do they have to pay MS or Sony to recode disc ever time they get them back from users? Or are they just out of business?
Seems to me that if the rumors on blocking used games were true, Game Fly would already be beating the war drums and fighting this in the press.

I don't see how anyone can criticize FC3 for a white character when not only the protagonist but his friends were portrayed as young immature rich white kids from the suburbs! So why is no one complaining about stereotyping whites!

Most hardcore gamers these days are preferring to get their challenge from MP instead of campaigns. And the action of gamers has been speaking louder than words for a long time! The plentiful use of cheat codes, mods, console commands, and exploiting glitches have given developers every reason to believe gamers want games they can complete!
