Trophies give you a goal, something to work towards. I don't play games just for trophies (or achievements in my case, Xbox Lyfe) but they do add some longevity to games once the usual fun has been had.
Achievements have made me keep playing through a bad spell in a game only for me to come out the other side into more fantastic game that I would have otherwise missed.
Tacked on multiplayer achievements can fuck off though.
