PS3 had really high manufacturing costs and the console was as I understand it redesigned several times before launch further increasing costs. The good news is that Sony learned from it and now knows how to produce a console that is profitable out of the gate.
Who cares who's E3 show floor shows multi-platforms? Microsoft showed Metro last year but it's not like I can't play it on my PS4. But if you want to play God of War you have to buy a PS4.
Perhaps the truth is simply that since even before they showed the console they have made the bad choices and that Phil has continued to make bad choices, and because of that consumers have simply rejected xbox.
No sarcasm no spite, my honest prediction is that Halo 6 sells less than Halo 5 did.
I feel like a lot of people have left xbox over the past couple years and that franchise fatigue and Microsoft's poor handling of games won't bring them back. I simply don't think Halo will sell consoles the way it did in the past.
It's hard for me to say when I want the next gen. Basically just as soon as they can create something that is a noticeable improvement for a reasonable price. If that's 2020 2021 or beyond isn't very important to me as long as there are good games releasing up to that date.
