It may not be a great system seller, but it is selling a decent amount of systems. I wouldn't say it's desperation praising a 125% increase, since without the game we would have seen the same measly 6,000 sold. While you may see it as laughable numbers, it is still a great improvement of previous sales.
I'm pretty sure he's getting that info from VGchartz's hardware sales.

This is great news! this is one of the games I was interested in when I first saw it in a list somewhere, can't remember where, but it looks very cool.

They're not all part of the same franchise now are they. Mario is getting milked for sure, but the main franchise isn't since any actual additions to it are usually few and far between. (I'm talking about the 3D platformers here)
like EcoSos3 said Nintendo has put out new IPs like Xenoblade, the last story, and pandora's tower. They also put plenty of new IPs for the 3DS like Pushmo, and Dillon's rolling western. You can't say nintendo isn't putting out new IPs when they are (or at least try too.)
If the console isn't making money anymore, why not? They'd much rather promote the wiiu than the wii, because let's face it, it isn't exactly priting bills anymore.
Anyways many companies do this to promote their product, you can't tell me you've never seen an ad that shows what their new product has and their old one doesn't through a chart. The chart is also nice for people who aren't really too into gaming that need to know what the differen...

i thought there was an interview with iwata or kojima saying that the two smash bros. will be two completely different experience. the console version has the best multiplayer experience, the 3ds one has the best single player one.
you can't forget that the VB actually ended up hurting some people...
