This game hits a 9/10 for me. I'm not by any means a fighting games guru, but this one has me hooked. It's a shame that online the people play extremely panzy like with turtling and corner molesting, but that's not the games fault it's the communities.
The online net code, the great diversity in characters, the artistic style, the challenge, etc etc is all top notch. The only real "flaw" is that I wish it had more animated cut scenes instead of the walls of text dialogu...
Star Ocean: The Second Story is still my favorite game of all time without question. I didn't bother with the remake after hearing some of the voice work they added in which kills it for me. They turned Claude from a cool voiced character into a whiny kid...why? I believe Celine also sounds like a MAN in the remake.
If something ain't broke then why fix it?
I'm still miffed that the Playstation store hasn't got the extra colors for each character DLC yet. The 360 had it the 2nd of the games release, and while it isn't AMAZING dlc I still want the extra Jin colors.
The most recent game with artistic style that popped out at me was Demon's Souls. The monster and character design is phenomenal. Every area in that game just oozes atmosphere and a big sense of dread.
Heck Demon's Souls was more spooky and survival horror like than RE5...which was being marketed as a scary game. The only scary thing I found in RE5 was the poor A.I...it's scary how crappy at game development you can be to let Sheva and enemy A.I be mentally handicapped at all poi...
You are seriously not missing anything with The Last Remnant. I beat the whole game and it was only because there was nothing else for me to play at the time. The story, voice acting, and dialogue is past cringe worthy---its pure trash. The story has no flow and its just chopped up events happening in odd intervals with odd things happening within them.
The game has a rock solid battle system though, which I kept focus on with a lot of side questing, but not everyone was pleased ...
Just beat it about 10 minutes ago. I was really disappointed about the final boss being 100% worthless.
Rest of the game is monumental though. :D
This is why I don't trust any reviews by these guys. Metal Gear Solid 2 was a bad sequel? You got to play snake for a bit, and if you had somehow played through snake that whole game---would you have gave any crap about Raiden in MGS4? No.

Honestly I assume it'll be a ton of V-13's, Jins, and maybe Noels in the finalists. From my time on the online portion of BlazBlue those are the top 3 characters generally, and their strategies are more or less being cheap to bang you into the corner and keep slamming you endlessly. My expertise for this game series only goes as far as the original back on PS2. I've passed on every entry after, BUT I've always been enticed by it with each entry that came.

There's plenty of great games coming out this year, but I think Uncharted 2 has sealed the deal on GOTY. I mean if it isn't Uncharted 2 then I want to know what game it is, because I'll play that instantly lol.

I think people are starting to confuse a Mature titled game and the word hardcore.
If a game is rated Mature for blood, violence, sex, etc that doesn't mean every super hardcore gamer will find it difficult or worth investing dozens of hours into, due to its lack of fun to challenge ratio.
However if a Mature titled game was made, and it was difficult to play, because you needed a background in gaming a lot, and someone who is casual gets their butt kicked constantly...
Speaking as someone who has beaten Demon's Souls it is NOT hard. The first few hours are challenging to get everything down and find out how to approach the levels correctly.
Yeah you will die a bunch in this game at different spots, but the # of times you die and how often will drop of substantially the more you play it due to leveling and your own experience with it.
It's far from being hard which is somewhat of a shame, since the best parts of Demons Souls are at ...
