I'm not sure I agree. It's possible that it's a factor, in that it adds variety - even if it's largely superficial variety - but I'd argue it's more a coincidence that a big reason for failure.

I'd love to see a Simon Cowell game. A version of Punch-Out with his face mapped to all of the opponents, or something. Or Left 4 Dead, with you killing hordes of zombie Simon Cowells with a mic stand. Or... well, the list goes on.
