I think the casual market is completely different from the hardcore. Different types of games and different playing habits. Casuals like to play together, with family and friends and the games have a different scope all together. I definitely think the 360 successor will hit late next year. MS will move to a 2 console strategy with Natal for the casual and the 720 for the hardcore. The PS2 is what saved sony this gen (before the PS3 actually started kicking some serious ass).
I don't think the 360/natal will be going anywhere....it will continue for around 3 more years but with overlap with the new console.

I do agree with you that the PS3 will close the gap once the MS launches the 720 (fall 2011), however, I disagree as to the whole natal/move. I think they will cancel each other out......neither will be able to hold a candle to what Nintendo will unveil next.....Nintendo is too strong in the casual market and Sony and MS's efforts in this area will be futile.
GT5, which will be released this fall, will move the PS3 about 2.5 million units closer to the 360. This is despite the fact that Halo:Reach will launch for the 360. IMO, most halo fans (or those looking forward to the game already have a 360). Many people, especially in Japan and Europe, are waiting to make the jump to PS3 once GT5 hits.

Halo : Reach or Gears 3
MS is releasing its 2 biggest games, halo and gears in fall 2010, and april 2011 respectively. april 2011 is when gears 3 releases...this will be MS's biggest game..period. After this, no more milking. This will be 2 months before e3 2011, when the 720 will be announced.
I highly doubt that future CoD games will ever be the same.
