I think they have the right plan. They'll ride it out with the psp (which already has an install base) until things blow over a bit with the 3ds.
The 3ds is obviously going to do well, why would they want to go head to head with it. Dodge the bullet by a year or two then release something to kill it.
edit. I got rid of my last psp but only in anticipation of getting a go. Haven't yet but will quite soon.

One of their strategies for making a profit on each ps3 is to ride the hdd market and get whatever hdd's are being sold cheapest.
Every new sku pairs the latest cheapest hard drives with the latest smallest version of the motherboard.
Good strategy really. They spend a bit more on r&d for the motherboards but save progressively more on making them, and spend about the same amount on hdd over time.
