There was a game released last gen, Hydrophobia I think it was called. From what I recall it had some really nice looking water, the game itself was kind of meh though.
Assuming it's even possible, they'd presumably overclock the current hardware, that would likely create some cooling issues and cause the components to burn out quicker than they normally would though so probably about as good an idea as releasing updated hardware halfway through a console generation (not very).

Actually, financially, they probably could a few times over. Nintendo is worth quite a bit more than some people seem to think, they made a ridiculous amount of cash from Wii and DS last gen, 3DS has sold fairly well and despite its poor performance they've managed to turn profit on Wii U as well.
As far as public perception goes though..... Well that's another story.

You're completely right, I forgot about that method. Can't imagine too many people would want to drill a hole in their PS4 though and as you say the nyko option isn't the prettiest, plus it looks like it might make the PS4 a bit top heavy if stood upright.
Hopefully a nicer solution comes along soon, or at least a nicer looking one.
I'm sure that was in one of the previous updates, as I saw an article a while back saying that the system finally supported the nyko databank or whatever it's called.
By the by, that's the only way you'll be able to get a 4TB hdd in the PS4, is with the nyko thingamabob as PS4 will only take 2.5" hdds and they only sell those up to 2TB at the minute.

I think they made one a while back, can't remember what system it was on though (possibly DS?), don't know if it was any good though as the Rangers games have always been a bit hit and miss and enjoyment tends to come from whether you're a fan of the series or not.
Also I've seen rumours going around that they're supposed to be remaking the Mighty Morphin' series.
Considering they refuse to support the current Vita? I'd say no.
But considering how much I love my Vita? I'd say yes.
