About the mass relays - i'm pretty sure it's been pretty well known that the technology comes from the Reapers for a while now.
They couldn't get away with charging for roster updates as the community already has the ability to that themselves.
What they should do is, as you said release a game every two or three years, but actively encourage the community to edit their playing rosters etc until the next release.

@ Kon - I actually don't think they'll lose sales from this at all. A large portion of people who buy the game for PC buy it to benchmark their systems - the release that is out there now is useless for this.
They've just about guaranteed that the top result for people looking for a torrent of the game will be the gimped version for a while after release, which could raise day one sales.
I'm waiting for the action figures personally.
I don't think it will revolutionize PC gaming....it might give it a push, and help sales in the future, but it is a technological revolution, not a gaming one.
