It did seem a lot like Viva Pinata at first, so you never know, it couldn't have been that bad (as the press went hands-on with an early build), I guess?

Yep, all versions are pretty much brilliant, and most people are unlikely to tell the differences - while they do change the atmosphere if I had only played the PS2 version I'd still have loved the game in the same way as the GC one, I'd just have not have been so impressed with the visuals (which are still impressive today on GC/Wii).

It was worse than prerendered - it was just recorded off the GC version, but either way different costumes didn't show up in the cutscenes.

Even if the PC version is modded does that change the fact the PC version's cutscenes all remain in SD, recorded off the realtime GC/Wii versions? That's one difference the article forgot to mention, that PS2/PC cutscenes aren't in realtime (they are FMVs recorded off GameCube).

Same thing with regards to the changed water, the removal of lighting effects, the lower polygon characters and objects - is it possible to change that all on the PC version?

It's hardly a fair comparison - we haven't seen much of the PSP2's game lineup for a start. When the 3DS was announced most the games, with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 3 were all new, whether it was DJ Hero 3D, a new Professor Layton, Kid Icarus, Super Street Fighter IV 3D (new back then), Resident Evil Revelations, Pilotwings Resort and so on.

Even now there are plenty of new games made from the ground up for 3DS, such as Time Travellers, Layton Vs Phoenix ...

It's not just the visuals that were changed though - whole chunks of levels were removed to fit for PS2/GC (the GC version had the same cuts PS2 did). I think it could not only be to do with different hardware but also the exclusivity Microsoft had with the franchise...look at Resi 4 - the PS2 version was inferior in many ways to the GC visually (lacked realtime lighting, less polygon counts on nearly all objects, no dynamic lighting, etc etc) 5493d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

I really do hope it's based off the Xbox/PC version - otherwise I won't be forking £30 for it on launch day.

Same goes for the PS3 HD remake, of course!

I agree - look at how much faster PES 2011 loads on 3DS - and it can stream commentary. That's likely the difference between a disc such as the UMD (I remember the PSP PES games had very long load times) and game card. Probably still a case by case scenario (as Ridge Racer 3DS takes as long as the PSP games to load but might be loading other things since 3DS Ridge Racer has improve shaders and so on and Capcom's MT Framework engine probably imposes load times on The Mercenaries 3D. <...

Don't forget that Tales of the Abyss has already been localised on PS2, so it'd be fairly easy to bring over (and the JPN version is based off the US PS2 one).

And as stated in the article Ubisoft brought over Tales of Eternia on PSP to Europe (a title that already got a localisation on PS1).

Also the cost of publishing a 3DS game has to be high - I can't see Tales of the Abyss being on a game card less than 2GB in size. This all makes the 3DS reg...

Graces F definitely looks great, though I wonder whether Namco will irritate Wii-only users by not localising the lead platform version of the game too.

I personally didn't find Vesperia bad compared to the other games in the series, while being a solid RPG it was just disappointing. It was such a missed opportunity - it was on a new system that could have moved the boundaries forward for the series yet it hardly brought any improvements to the table.

Exactly - it's bad for Nintendo, bad for consumers and bad for developers. It's an odd decision since they've made good progress elsewhere - changing currency values from points to pounds, making a good UI, at least having it out in the launch period.

Shame they only sent out dev kits to indie developers in January, there's no way a lot of quality content will be ready for launch.

Since many people are disagreeing with me - would a biased towards 3DS site really admit and go into detail that Apple's App Store is miles ahead of 3DS's eShop, to point out Nintendo have disappointed in the aspect of online retail? http://3dstribe.com/feature...

@Parapraxis - actually, when did Sony or Microsoft remove the barrier to 3D that was costly technology (3DTVs) and gl...

Have a read of this: http://www.metro.co.uk/tech... . You can't make such statements about PSP2, wink or no wink, it's too early to decide on the system's fate. We know far more about 3DS. ;)

@Parapraxis - it isn't putting it down, it's merely accessing it in the grand scheme of things, that is, if you've been living in the real gaming world...

Well it's not exactly the Official Nintendo Magazine. It's an independent website, much like how independent magazine NGamer (the opposite of the Official Magazine in the UK) shows little bias towards Nintendo.

And it's not like any of the reasons in the article aren't valid or ridiculous...

Just hope content-wise things will be there for the people/expanded audience most used to paying £2-3 for a game on the App Store. Which means Nintendo need to be getting dev kits to a lot of indie developers. Though some of the flaws with the eShop's implementation do make me seem whether it'll be an attractive platform to develop for in the long run.

Yeah I imagine the battery life, like with smartphones is pretty good when the screen is off and the lid is closed into standby/low power mode playing music.

After all the reason the battery life is around 3-5 hours in 3D is due to the screen brightness needing to be extremely high for 3D (according to Iwata Asks).

Fixed!

Certainly righting more wrongs of the past, this is. It's all about the integration with other software and so on, and Nintendo's seems to have got it right this time.

Yes really! As I said earlier, this generation Nintendo has been very inventive and innovative - just mostly outside of "traditional games". Wii Sports and Cooking Guide are perfectly valid IPs, just because they appeal to more than the core gamer doesn't mean you can disregard them.

As for The Last Story, it's published by Nintendo and thus Nintendo also own the rights to it, hence Mistwalker can't bring it to other platforms. Just like Fluidity/Hydrove...

Nintendo haven't made any new IPs? Hmmm...what are Jam With the Band, Nintendogs, Wii Music, Wii Fit, Brain Training, Cooking Guide, Wii Sports, Rhythm Heaven, Steel Diver, Ouendan, Elite Beat Agents, The Last Story, Batallion Wars, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Hotel Dusk, Another Code and more I have probably forgotten then?

But you should know you barely see new IPs from the platform holder for the launch of a portable platform these days.
