You would have to be pretty blind to not realize the PS3 is not nearly as successful as its predecessor, the PS2. Microsoft's Xbox did only a dent to the PS2, but the 360 literally took market away from the PS3. There is no denying that.
Hmm...well which company do you think will throw more funds into their next gen console, a company that did awful this gen, or a company that made a profit?
So yeah, sales do affect us, and thus what you play is a related to how well sales are for the console/ a previous installment of a game.
