Yes! That's what makes the quote so puzzling. The entertainment division, with the PS4 front and center, is what keeps Sony profitable right now. That may or may not change in the future; but it's certainly an odd statement from a mucky-muck at Sony. Do you think Elon Musk will ever call EVs "niche" (even if they are)?

How kind of him to call Sony's major profit source "niche".

The current top standard for PC output is DisplayPort, not HDMI. DP 1.4 can do 8K at 60 Hz with HDR. I'm sure the latest HDMI standard will get integrated into graphics cards in time, but it's not as if we're hurting now.

To be fair, NVMe-level SSDs haven't been a thing for too many years; and they're not the usual thing even now. (SATA III is still very much the PC norm.)

In theory, you're wrong, because you can just update components. But in practice, you're kinda right. Every time you buy a motherboard (the base of the system), you get locked into several standards that may change or get superseded in a year or two. CPUs in particular are a pain, because newer ones often use different sockets, or capabilities older motherboards don't have. If I have to replace the motherboard, I need to take the entire system apart. I'd rather build a wh...

Current consoles are based on the x86 architecture, like PCs. Next gen, with Zen2 and Navi, they'll practically merge with PC hardware design. So of course, there are going to be comparisons.

If you mean current gen, yes. The architecture is very close. That's what makes them so easy to develop for. Next gen, they'll be even closer, with APUs that could be transplanted directly into PCs.

I'd guess close to a good up-to-date gaming PC, which gets into the low 4 figures (in US $).

Yeah. If you don't care, you don't post. You probably don't even read past the headline. Plus raining on other people's parades needs to get called out. There's no reason for being a spoilsport.

To clarify what you said, NVMe is 5-6 times the speed of SATA III SSDs (the current norm), which are much faster than HDDs. There is no reason to build it into the motherboard. That would be rather dumb, since SSDs can fail with long use, and you'd need a whole new system board if a failed drive is integrated into it. NVMe SSDs on PC connect via the M.2 interface, and they lie flat against the motherboard. They're similar to memory DIMMs (though they usually stand up at 90 degrees...

How are they delusional, when the story you're commenting on pegs the game at #1 in UK sales? And boxed sales are just the tip of the iceberg now, a big change since the original launched. Digital sales are not included in the figure.

It isn't, because it has no physical consequences (assuming otherwise healthy people who eat right and at least walk a while regularly). But it can definitely have consequences similar to drug addiction in social and professional circles. I would not call it a disease either. Disorder or condition, perhaps.

Again with this garbage. Are you tired of being able to go wherever you want, whenever you want? Do you want to simplify your life by walking down a corridor where things happen without any choices? Horse blinders might help.

It improves all games. Updating software frames at half the hardware refresh always looks jittery and wrong. 30 fps has got to go, before higher resolution is even considered.

Yes. Yes it is. He agrees, but not emphatically enough.

You shouldn't have to; but apparently there are enough people around who don't understand basic economics.

More competition is better, as long as the playing field is level.

LOL! I had the same first impression. WTH do current sick politics have to do with gaming platforms. "Divisive" itself is a trigger word.

The PC is a successful long-term standard because it is an OPEN standard. Anyone can participate in its design innovations, and build components for it. Anyone can use it as they see fit, without companies dictating terms of use (not even Microsoft). As a result, it has flourished like nothing else ever. It is an exception to the rule, for which we owe IBM a huge debt of thanks; but they did so out of naivete rather than benevolence. They thought owning the rights to their hardware was e...
