This isn't required for the 360 to function, it is an option. If you got the money get one if you don't then fine. It will still be around the PS3 price in the US. Atleast if the HD-DVD player gives out, I won't be out of a 360.

My 360 doesn't run hot and it has been on for 3 straight days, playing music and movies, playing games after work (btw saints row kicks a$$)I leave it on like I leave my computer on and not a problem since launch. I don' think it is, I don't care what kind of processors you use if it takes 16,000 it is a super computer. It will get surpassed by an intel based supercomputer shortly. Specifically quad cores, it would take half as many of those to smoke 16,000 cell processors.
