Lets not get ahead of ourselves bud. There's guns and there's bad guys... that's about as generic as cod4 got (in my opinion of course, respectively).
The one very big thing you are skipping over (although something similar had come before it...infinity ward perfected it.) was the finely tuned level up system that went along with multiplayer... That is as close to the textbook definition of "not" generic as it gets.

You have a valid point. Halo I was initially more of a "a-bomb in the gaming world" becuase it came out of nowhere.
Nobody was ready for it; maybe some followed the development.. but nobody prior to it's release would have told you that it would be the most recognized video game between 2000 & 2010.
As far as II and III go.. i thought 2 was good, but not mind-blowingly spectacular like we all know the first one was.. Now 3 went against the mold.. ...

First off, anybody who played the orange box on both consoles (I know some of you have) would have noticed that the ps3 version missed the mark by quite a bit. The 360 version was spectacular and while the graphics may not have been completely and fully the "latest uber d00ber h0tn3ss!!" it made up for with the story presentation and art direction.
