I have to agree with you on all your points and also mention that considering I was already mentally ready to call the gamepad a gimmick this game ended up making me a believer instead.
The way the gamepad is used really does add to the gameplay and fear in the game. Between using it as a scope for guns and scanning your environment it seems to me at least to draw you more into the game's world.
I know not everyone was a fan of Sega's Condemned games ...

I haven't been excited about a side-scrolling Mario in quite a while but if this one really is a lot like Super Mario World than I will undoubtedly crap myself with nostalgic fun.
Nintendo should innovate by getting rid of the jump button and adding a cover system. (sarcasm)
