It's true DD will not be the only way to do things, but eventually, it will be ubiquitous. Just like MP3's are slowly becoming the major method of distributing music. Markets like conformity and they tend to follow trends. The trend here is that as a civilization we are transitioning away from owning physical goods and transitioning to a virtual or intellectual society. As an IP attorney, I see evidence of this trend continuing everyday. The newspaper is being replaced by the blog like t...

to winning. Can any of you folks honestly say you don't enjoy downloading off of I-tunes. You might hate the fact that you have to go to them, but it has created a situation where in the future, ALL MUSIC will be downloaded except for a small niche of collectors with the money to afford the soon to be very expensive and hard to find beloved discs. The facts are these in the only situation which is analogous to the instant one...downloading is proving to be an unstoppable juggernaut. Has a...

Almost all are made from emotion and not from a basis in logic and fact.

Fact: MP3s have fundamentally hurt the CD industry.

Ask yourself how many people buy a CD still?

Fact: No technology in recent cycles completely eradicates another.

As an example, I can still easily find a mini-disc at Best Buy.

So, it is much more likely that we are going to have a hybrid system. Digital download will begin with rudimentary st...

Hate to bust anyone's bubble, but it is my understanding that content delivery companies are busy working on further compression / decompression schemes....you see, they want to be able to deliver blu-ray and Hd-dvd in home. The method is going to be akin to the method used by the IPOD where you can set the level of what is received (e.g. lossless, 128k, 256k, etc.). High compression files are cheaper and eventually, folks will begin to settle for a just good enough sound like we already do...

The news is all over the web. Further, does Sony have the cash to respond to this?

Recall that Msft has just made a bonanza in cash with Halo 3 and a huge uptick in Vista sales. Toshiba is also selling at a stable and healthy clip.

Isn't this really a plan to go for the jugular?

BE HONEST! And I love Sony TVs, Receivers and whatnot, but these guys ...

take a look at the prices on pricescan.com. If you want a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD machine, just buy one. No need to necessarily give MS or Sony your money. :-) Blu-Ray available as low as $429!!

HDMI spec wasn't confirmed. For that matter, it still isn't. I hear rumblings of going beyons v.1.3. :-) Guess the hardware manufacturers won't be happy unless we're all broke.

as LeatherSoup says earlier,
"The reason that a film or a movie is able to look so good on a 480P TV is because its a picture of the REAL world it does not have to be rendered."

Plus, if this could be done, Sony or MS would have already begun photo-rendering. But in reality, we would require multiple super-computers to perform real-time photo rendering even at 480I/P resolution.

Why?
You sample a source which has an infinite resolution...

what is important is to establish the likelihood of a given event taking place.

That said I find his initial comments on multi-core processors to be without merit because they lack evidentiary support.

However, his secondary snipet:

"The Wii has the perfect design for a console that doesn't pretend to be a PC and is geared more toward casual gamers than hardcore gamers. The hardcore gamers are going to either be playing on their PCs or a new P...

It is absolutely without foundation. It lacks the fundamental propositions built upon evidence to support the ultimate conclusion. The burden is on the guy making the hypothesis to elevate the central proposition to theory. It doesn't work any other way. If that was the case, then relativity would not have had to be proven....nor gravity, nor inertial effects, etc...all science is based upon this structure. Anything less is inherently untrustworthy and subject to manipulation. Once again...

First off this article, if this is what anyone is reying upon to back up their argument is unreliable and engages in suspect analysis. I have yet to see anyone back up this guy's analysis or state why it should deserve merit. I can think of a ton of reasons why it does not, but none for it given the methods of analysis employed.

There's a mistake in the analysis. It has fundamental error inherent to it. Yes, measuring actual sales is a better method, but stores don't release ...

If you had read what many of us wrote, we are just saying that if you're depending on this article to say that MS is losing its swagger, it is not a proper undertaking of analysis.

Publishers and Devs are scrambling to pump out titles, and there is no indication that sales will slow down. If anything, I think Wii could race right past 360 (PS3 will never catch up!! Sorry fanbois, and I own the PS3 in addition to the Wii and 360) in the next 3 to 4 months.

Whether you hate or like the Wii, it is outselling any console ever made. Period. You can complain about supply, but its rate of sale is leaving the other console in the dust and doing so in unpreced...

First off, I own all three systems.

Reading this article I conclude it is junk science. There's a mistake in the analysis. It has fundamental error inherent to it. Yes, measuring actual sales is a better method, but stores don't release such info. However, shipping units normally correlates well with sales, and it's much easier to measure. Retail chains normally take only what they need. Profit is the bottom line. Stores ultimately look out for themselves, not Microsoft. If t...

Dusk and the author of this article are merely reciting why competition from M$ is good for P$3. And the $$$ signs are there on purpose. Without reducing some of the developing cost and risk, the PS3 would be primarily a movie player and a gaming machine second. MS has helped to do that by having a user base that augments Sony's base. The same is true for MS. This is a symbiotic relationship at this point and not a cannabalistic business venture yet. So, for the all of the Fanbois, no ne...

You are exactly on point. Sony is bleeding cash into the PS3 line. They have the further issue of bleeding cash into Blu-Ray, and their ultimate issue is that continued high sales of PS2's with high attachment rates, along with Wii and X360 core sales are cannabilizing or siphoning sales away from PS3. These are the simple facts. If you look at any numbers of items sold, you will see this happening.

The practical reality is that it has added a force multipli...
