I'd like to say that you are probably right as well. The problem is that nobody wants to hear the truth. And the truth is that while I might want fully uncompressed 7.1 True Dolby HD and a full rendition of a game in DeepColor at 60FPS, I'm not willing to wait 3 or 4 years between every release...nor do I want to pay 3-4x as much for games as I do now.
You see, I have a 7.1 channel system and I don't have any content to play on it. Further, I have an HDTV, but frankly, I'm...

I think it is a pure A/V centric machine...photos, web, movies, IPTV, DVR, etc...and a Blu-Ray-RW. If so, I'll be buying one or two. :-)
Sony has to do something to battle the shenanigans of Paramount or otherwise, movies won't be coming out on any disc medium in the near future (try 2011 or 2012 - long before Hi-def media penetration). The refer...
what you have written is Well said, bubbles for your sir.
But still some idiots on here are cheerleaders for Blu-Ray or M/S or HD-DVD or whoever instead of being focused on taking the industry forward. That's why this site is N4G...not N4F.
Most enjoyable thread.
All that either format does is get more storage space using different technology. If you were to rip the contents down bit by bit of either to a suitable harddrive and begin playback, the quality would be the same...absolutely no difference.
All this guy did was set out the best, most logical and well-pronounced explanation of why certain technology was probably before its time.
I happen to agree...so you know what I did. I hit the agree button and above I stated why. To the person who disagreed, I hope you have an OLED tv and are running an 11.2 system. Please tell me you've got the technical understanding and background to actually put up a reasonable response!! This is absurd.
If Blu-ray was o...
If Blu-ray becomes the dominant storage format and Microsoft adopts the, let's say Blu-Ray 100 Gb disc....are the developers really going to use it? What would you put on a 100 Gb disc?
Are there that many people with full 7.1 surround sound systems? My home theater installers here in Houston (they put in 10,000 systems here in Houston last year) say it is rare and they were a little ticked at having to run so much speaker cable through the ceiling and wall. When I go to the...
would cheap Blu-ray players come out for the masses the month after?
I don't think so. Sony needs to maintain rather high licensing fees to maintain cash flow and recoup the front end outlay of the tech.
Further, they are going to have real problems when Spec 2.0 comes out. My bet is that this is much more complicated than just one die and the other pick up sales. HDTV penetration is still just not that high yet. Granted the prices are coming down to more of...
that is keeping this thing alive. Msft makes money on the VC-1 codec no matter who sells movies. :-) They just need a bit more time to get digital downloading more mainstream. Everybody (including Sony) is already hedging their bets in the more and more likely event that this becomes a SACD / DVD-A type of situation. That was the last format war...not VHS / Beta. The question is do the masses care enough about HDtv to buy the newest HD medium...so far that hasn't been borne out by sales....
Go and check out a PDP-6010FD.
The picture is the best that there is...period...end of story.
Black levels that are so good, you'd swear that it wasn't a plasma tv and native 1080P/24 support with 3:3 pulldown means any stepdown or up is smooth, smoother and smoothest.
Way too many on here stuck on their brand loyalty. If you want the best, just buy the best, Right now in terms of tvs, it's still Pioneer.
If you're looking at HD pl...
If you've got the equipment, you say you've got...take a photo of your setup and put it on photobucket and provide a link. My setup is a sick, sick Onkyo 7.1, Martin Logan mains, Paradigm 2500 series sub, and Samsung 50" plasma. I have ordered the Pioneer 6010FD and I can post pictures to show my stuff, but I wonder how many of the rest of the kids here can barely afford their PS3 or X360 or Wii and just talk a good game.
If you've got it, show it. I will go home and t...
If combo players become the norm, what will that do to sales of the Microsoft Xbox 360 and it HD-DVD drive and the PS3??
Further, if combo drives become the norm, does anyone see content providers remaining aligned with one side or the other?
Accordingly, if combo players price outstrips the cost of a PS3 and that of an Xbox 360 and HD-DVD drive, will this result in a move away from video game sales and an increase in casual games such as with the Wii?

They are tracking nit-picks to be fair of every machine...both likes and dislikes and projecting what they believe folks would like to see in the next versions.
They were fairly objective and while some may disagree with the ultimate conclusions...on balance, they were fair.
I especially liked how they recognized that all consoles are gearing up for digital downloading in the future. They noted the historical shift in mediums and their lifecycles. This whole ...
He's just crying over spilled milk. The writers are on strike and they are winning concessions in what is the likely and more pervasive medium in the future. Blu-Ray / HD-DVD, if they take off are already old tech. In 10 years, high-speed digital downloading to personal devices, greater access to highspeed internet, super cheap storage - (imagine 100 terrabyte drives solid state at $250, and advanced new 3D chipsets (already being experimented with today), employing advanced compression al...

You guys are missing the boat. The real question is will the public actually embrace the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc?
The money for MS is in DD. For Sony, the money is in Blu-Ray and DD. You see what many fail to realize is that Sony is in too weakened of a position on its balance sheets not to hedge its bets with a DD system for the PS3. What folks also fail to realize is that just because these film companies are currently dealing with game folks what stops a company from designing a video view box with a blu-ray or hd-dvd recorder in it? You see, even if blu-ray wins as a storage medium, MS doesn't ca...
The facts are that Sony and MS are quickly moving to embrace digital downloading. MS just beat Sony to the punch on Divx, but don't be surprised to see Sony announce their updates to their media hub with much fanfare in any regard.
Further, your statement regarding whether it would be smart or not is irrelevant to the fact that this is currently happening. Moreover, just because we don't have ubiquitous envelopment of high-speed connectivity is no reason to say that it isn't...
This article is useless. It states nothing new and doesn't advance the ball. If it had said, there will be $150 Blu-rays...okay or $59 HD-DVD players...okay...but the idea that the further the format war lingers on the more people will get used to digital downloads is just plain common-sense.
Otherwise, this article says nothing. Somebody give me bubbles for stating the obvious and saving you precious time to play games. Thanks.
