ps2 had sold 10 million the first year, and had stock shortages all over.
The ps3 well....not so much.
but they are phenominal at marketing. it is a direct result of better marketing as to why we are using windows right now as opposed to whatever macs are running.
but in regards to mass effect, it is looking like a great game, deserving of the hype. all the vids and reports I have seen from people who have played it are amazing.

with the HUGE base they had from last round (100+ million to xbox's 25-30 million) ps3 should have wiped the floor against the 360 sales the first year.
If 5 yrs from now the 2 were still even for sales would it be considered good for sony? no, it would mean the ps3 was a catastrophic failure. but it would be a huge win for MS and nintendo for dethroning the big guy.

no I don't think it would have had shortages like the wii. lack of titles, and an undecided format war were also big factors in holding the ps3 back from ps2's success. the would have done a bit better with a lower price, but not by much.
