A) Make PS3 owners feel good about their purchase and hope that microsoft will sit on their hands while PSN simple become a better service... ofcourse for free.

It's obvious that it's not on developers best interest to have one console dominating the market... 3rd developers would have no where to go if the dominating console maker (i.e. microsoft, Sony or Nintendo) flips on them... due to large install base it makes business sense for developers to support the console with the most consoles which is not currently not the Playstation 3.
