But first-party graphics engine made aiming only on PS3 architecture will not be more abroad for graphical updates rather than a third-party engines made to work in a large array of plataforms with virtually no restrictions of hardware power (like pc). In other words, they are using the same ps3-only gfx engine of the game ported and optimized for ps4 and there is not much road far ahead to explore.

A game that still have roots from PS3 compatibility doesn´t allow for a better modeled characters.. still to clayish in comparison NBA 2K14.
Hopefully, next year, a real-deal graphics engine made for PS4 architecture will crush 2K14 graphically.
The system MIGHT be outdated, but the pace works much better for extended periods of gameplays because the player do as he please.
