your comment is totally on point. i am "joe six-pack", and i'm a gamer/tech geek. if i could afford blu ray, i would buy it. plain and simple. when i heard about the A2 sale, i was all over it like white on rice. why? cause now i can afford to get into hd with minimal risk involved. in a years time if hd dvd goes belly up, all i've done is spend $100 on an upconverting dvd player. sure some will say that if i can't afford a blu ray player or ps3 how can i afford the discs, but ...

where has it been said that existing hd dvd hardware can't play the 51gig discs. last i heard the dvd forum was still doing r&d to ensure that it would be compatible with all existing hd dvd players as to ensure that there are no legacy issues. i.e., they don't want to screw their early adopters. hd dvd is trying to become the successor to dvd, not necessarily become the defacto storage medium. why would you need anything more than 50 gigs or so for a movie? besides, the relatively low ...

you make some valid points, especially about sony's inclusion of blu ray in the ps3 securing blu's future existence. i think alot of people are getting a few things confused though. it was walmart and other retailers that dropped the price of the A2 to $99, not toshiba or microsoft. toshiba suggested they retail for $199. sure toshiba might be taking a loss on these entry level players (including the A3), but they're doing so to get them into consumers homes. if they can get into more hom...

i can't believe how many people have swallowed the pr bullsh1t. 11.1-> "As for the price of HD-DVD's? I kinda fell they have finally lowered the price to what the product is actually worth. I always felt it was a little steep to ask people to pay so much for something when it isn't really High Definition." all i can say is wow. since when hasn't 720p/1080i/1080p been high def? both hd dvd and blu-ray are based on the same blue laser technology, the only difference is in the dis...

i don't even have a hdtv yet, but i jumped on this cause it was just too good to pass on. gee let's look at it like this, a decent upconverting dvd player for $100 or a hd-dvd player for that price? which would you choose. even if hd-dvd loses, at least i didn't drop mad loot on what would essentially become an upconverting dvd player by virtue of said player becoming obsolete. virtually no risk to upgrade, that's what consumers want. thanks toshiba! now i just hope my tax return is nice ...

the author makes some great points. i am "the average joe", and i just bought the A2 at walmart yesterday. it was just to good of a deal to pass up. a high-def media player for $100 or a decent upconverting dvd player for the same price? it was a no-brainer. when i talked with the department manager she told me they had a whole pallet of them when the sale started on friday, and by noon on saturday there were only 6 left. still priced at $100! i personally think this will give hd...

although, i wouldn't be surprised if this has something to do with the BBB or someone else(can't remember specifically) saying that EA could be held liable for selling a substandard product.

i'm a gamer, not a fanboy. meaning i will play any game on any console. screw brand loyalty! the only thing i'm loyal to is my girl and my wallet. when was the last time one of these companies did anything that really benefitted anyone but themselves. i have a wii, a 360, and will have a ps3 when sony starts selling them with the dualshock 3 packed in. even though this is just a rumor, i wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be true. look at some of the statements that have been mad...

it wouldn't surprise me at all if M$ asked a developer to build a mobile version of halo on a touchscreen platform (a'la ds) to test the viability of such a venture. if M$ introduced a touchscreen version of the zune that's capable of playing 3d rendered games, it would make total sense why this was killed. something like this would be exactly what M$ needs to save the zune and further its war with sony. could you imagine a touchscreen zune with a solid state hard drive, xbox live mobile s...

so many consumers were turned off by the original price of the ps3 that this may go completely unnoticed. or this could be the spark that sony needs. who knows? i know i personally won't be making the purchase because there are too many unresolved issues. rumor: no bc in 40gig, no usb support, no media card reader, and no dual shock 3. these are all features that are "rumored" to not be in the 40gig. supposedly that's how sony is able to offer it at $399. to educated gamers, the ...

this would be huge if it happens, but i'll wait for something official before i believe it. personally, i've never been a fan of FF so i could care less. MGS4 looks sweet, but after playing splinter cell, i find the stealth action of the MGS series a little lacking. still fun, but not quite on the same level as splinter cell. oh well, we'll see what happens. on a completely unrelated note, i just won a copy of madden through pepsi's call your play!!!!!!!! yeah!!!!!!!!!!!

and the oscar for most incredible ad marketing goes to .............. microsoft for halo 3!!!!!!!!! seriously, i've been trying to stay objective and unfazed by these ads but damn, they are amazingly well done. if nothing else, the bar for marketing and advertising a game has definitely been raised.

imo, the sales numbers for both the xbox 360 and the ps3 really only reflect early adopters. like you said, most people don't own hdtv's nor do they know what hdmi, hi-def resolutions, or blu-ray/hd-dvd are. i own a 360, but only cause my girlfriend bought me one last christmas. if it weren't for her generous gift, i'd still be waiting to make that purchase. i also own a wii, and one day hope to have a ps3 when the price is right. in terms of price moving hardware, you are so right. peopl...

it's these kind of corporate decisions that piss me off about sony. don't get me wrong, they make good consumer electronics but this is forcing your agenda on others. i personally think that both blu-ray and hd-dvd will both be around, but this is a blatant move to force people to choose a format. maybe their corporate division needs to learn some humility like their game division has.

the ps3 does not need saving. there are enough loyal sony consumers that will keep it afloat. what sony needs is standardization. what i mean is this, there are a lot of people like myself that are perfectly happy with the ps2 and the only benefit in the ps3 that we see is the blu-ray player. anyone that has done any research into purchasing a high-def player knows that the format is not standardized yet and is also facing competition from hd-dvd which is standardized. not only that, the...

while some of the points in this article are a little convoluted, the author still presents a good piece. this is more of a hype war than format war. until both hdtvs and players hit mass market prices, things really aren't going to start moving. this christmas should be interesting though with the rumored entry of sub-200 dollar hd-dvd players.

when will this pointless nonsense stop. " if you line up sales of the ps3 and 360 since launch you'll see their about the same," utter rubbish. the only reason they're the same is cause microsoft couldn't get enough 360's to the market. after the 360 launch how many did you see just gathering dust on the shelves of your local retailer? none, that's how many. what really amuses me is that so many people think that one or two games is really gonna make someone go out and drop 500 ...

the porn industry in japan is supporting blue-ray, not the american porn industry. so far they are siding with hd-dvd due to some "imperial entanglements" with sony over putting porn on blue-ray. pirates was supposed to be on blue-ray, but sony wouldn't allow it, that's why its on hd-dvd. the article about it is in IGN's archives.

ironwolf pointed out one point that most are totally disregarding. the average american consumer buys their consumer electronics based on price. blueray will be around the same way umd is still around, but ultimately hd-dvd will claim the crown. this is just my opinion, but here are some things to think about;

1. by the time the enty-level price points for hdtvs' hit the mass-market level, hd-dvd players will probably be about $149 while blueray players will probably be $250...
