I actually hope the trend of exclusive content for multiplatform releases ceases. I think it is a terrible practice to favor one sect of your supporters over another.
Making a game exclusive is one thing, but if you are going to sell your product to two different groups of people then you should treat them the same.
I just cancelled and re-ordered Portal 2 just to make sure that I get the additional $20 credit. That is a great deal.
Oh don't feel sorry for us. We have a killer year of gaming ahead of us.
I keep seeing people complain about Sony requesting a list of IP addresses, but what I can't understand is why people are upset about it.
Sony never requested user information related to those IP addresses. An IP address without user information is just a meaningless number. They just used those addresses to prove that people in California were involved, to prove jurisdiction.
Sony did not violate anyone's privacy by requesting a list of IP addresse...
Their biggest attack huh? What are they going to do this time? Send pizzas to Mr. Tretton's house, but this time put extra cheese on them?
So it is ok for an independent developer to make fun of the red ring on multiple platforms, but it is not ok for an independent developer to make fun of the red ring on only one platform?
Sucker Punch is not owned by Sony. They are an independent studio. They are basically no different than Epic Games with respect to company ownership. Why is it ok for one independent studio to make fun of the red ring (Epic Games w/ Bulletstorm), but it is not ok for another independent studio to do it?
I am sure you feel the same way about the red ring easter egg in Bulletstorm right? You know, that multiplatform game that is published by Epic Games.
I am married with kids and a full time job and I still find 20 hours a week to enjoy my hobby. I work, come home and spend some time with the kids until they go to bed, spend a bit of time with the wife, and take some time for myself at night. If you think you can't manage that with a girlfriend or job then maybe you need better time management skills Blad3star.
I am proud of my daughter every time she brings home a good test score. You can be proud of things that are expected as the norm. Positive reinforcement is a powerful thing.
Yeah I don't think Sony was terribly concerned with a couple of minor DDoS attacks and some pizza being sent to Mr. Tretton. It takes two parties to settle, and Sony got the better deal.
Whoah whoah slow down there. Now you are just making things complicated. Why collect a steady paycheck when you can just follow the above fool-proof plan?
People did not donate money to him for it to go to a charity. People donated to him in an effort to help him fight for their right to modify their hardware, or at the very least to get Other OS back. If he accepts money under that pretense, and turns around and gives money to charity (that he will no doubt write off on his taxes) then it is still basically fraud.
The DMCA does not have to specifically include the PS3. It is broad enough in scope to cover it by default, as long as no exemption exists.
Nothing needed to be decided about the legality of jail-breaking the PS3. It is already a violation of the DMCA to do so.
People were hoping that Hotz would win and get an exemption established for game consoles. That did not happen, therefore no exemption will be made.
As it stands smart phones are exempted from the DMCA, not game consoles.
At $10k per violation he certainly won't be taking credit for it.
It seems like a viable business strategy to me.
1) Take a stab at a major corporation.
2) Wait to get sued by said major corporation.
3) Ask for donations under the pretense of fighting the good fight.
4) Agree to play nice with said major corporation.
5) ????
6) Profit!
Edit: I forgot to throw in a South American vacation between numbers 3 and 4.
cgoodno is correct. Settlements do not set precedence. However, Sony did not have to set a precedence in this case. It is already set with the DMCA. Hacking game consoles is still a violation of the DMCA. If anything it was Hotz that failed to set a precedence (like he did with the iPhone).
He is also not allowed to circumvent the security or gain unauthorized access to any Sony product, nor is he allowed to encourage others to do so. I read the settlement PDF on psx-scene.
I actually mapped out directions to the nearest Sony Style store for that very purpose. All of this publicity that Anonymous is giving Sony is making me want another TV. Sure I could just go to Best Buy, but why pass on the chance to piss off random idiots?
