That's extreme. Then again maybe there probably weren't that many affected so it's probably just smart PR.

MGS4 and Uncharted have the best textures ever seen on a console. Since the PS3 has 50% more texture processors than the 360 it shouldn't be any surprise.

What makes MGS4 stand out is that the lighting is simply godly. In some scenes it surpasses even Crysis and approaches CGI quality (although in most scenes it's a distant second).

One thing that made Gears 1 appear to have really good graphics (despite being technically average even among 360 games) was the fact that the texture resolution was high for the time. It was low on polygons and the lighting was simplified and baked but the dense textures (and shinyness) captured the eye.

These scans of gears 2 are not shiny and have low texture resolution. Surprising. While it makes sense that they've downgraded the polycount in order to display a larger nu...

Microsoft rushed the 360 onto the market in order to grab an early lead in marketshare by being the only console on the market. It was a one year window of opportunity that failed to produce the desired results for a number of reasons.

Apart from cut-back capability (no standard hard-drive on all 360s, no Blu-Ray or HD-DVD standard, no standard wifi, etc...) and a nickel-and-dime pricing strategy (pay extra for features that should be standard) the biggest problem was the inabil...

How can we know this? Compare polygon heavy console exclusive games that are optimized for the hardware (unlike multiplatform games) for which we know the numbers. These are the theoretical peak polygons being processed for the cars on track in the following racing games.

PGR4: 100,000 per car x 12 cars x 30fps = 36M per second
GT5: 200,000 per car x 16 cars x 60fps = 192M per second

Anyone who has seen both games will tell you the GT5 cars really do look th...

The 360 is good for people who want to play by themselves or with a friend at their house because it has split-screen.

But it does not support user-generated content, keyboard and mouse support, plus you have to play extra to play online.

The best graphics out there (with the possible exception of Crysis) is MGS4. Uncharted is second. Both games look absolutely incredible. In fact, some of the textures in Uncharted have to be seen to be believed. COD4 has good art style and it's baked lighting and shadows are cleverly done but it's textures are simply not as good as the other games. Part of the reason is because COD4 was designed for the 360 which has only 2/3s the texture processing units of the PS3.

This is the only difference. You can easily see the lack of hardware support for HDR on the 360 by pausing the video. The parts that are black on the PS3 are black on the 360 but the parts that are grey and transitioning to black are often fully black on the 360. Because the 360 hardware does not support HDR it compensates by emphasizing the darker areas. As a result, the image tends to have a bit more "pop" but it's less technically correct. Since the Unreal Engine isnt really...

The reason the PS3 is outselling the Xbox360 by such a large margin is because

1) Unreliable
2) Does not play Blu-Ray movies
3) Nickel-and-diming pricing structure

Whereas for PS3/Wii everything needed to play all available games using all the game features (like online) is included in each console. Even the lowest priced PS3 has the full feature set including wifi and free online. With the Xbox360, by the time you add all those things, and consider t...

Both use limited color palettes for to reduce frame-buffer requirements. Both have tons of shading and great textures. The difference is that in Gears (any UE3 game), the lighting is simplified and baked in, with high contrast used to mask the lack of gradation while in Killzone the HDR lighting is dynamic, and real-time which means it's much better. UE3 lighting is flashy (due to contrast) but not accurate (but still looks good) while Killzone lighting is probably a lot better than it nee...

HDR and a broader color palette are much more important (and demanding of the graphics chip) than the "effects" you care so much for on the Xbox360 version. Those so-called effects are basically there to cover up the failings of the graphics. The PS3 version is sharper, clearer, and richer looking because there's too high a performance cost to use HDR and a full-color pallete on the XBox360.

As for frame-rate collapses, it's no surprise that the frame-rate collapses m...

The PS3 has a racing game that looks better (better car models, better lighting, better shadows), is rendered at a better resolution, and runs at literally double the frame-rate (60fps) with virtually no dropped frames. If codemasters couldn't get GRID running at 30fps without dropping frames on the PS3 (let alone a smooth 60fps like GT5!), it's because codemasters needs to rework their software. If GT5 is using the RSX graphics chip at 100% then this game (based on resolution and frame-rat...

Eurogamer: PS3 version looks better but the Xbox360 version has better graphics.

Readers: Huh??

The reason why the XBox360 looks worse is because

1) Unlike PS3 version it has no HDR (to reduce frame-buffer size)
2) uses a simplified color scheme (to reduce frame-buffer size)
3) relies on blurring to mask the lack of draw-distance (you do not want blurring in a shooter!)

The reason why the PS3 version does not have AA is because...

"Hard-core gamers need Microsoft more. Much more"
-Edge Magazine (NGII review)

Openly endorsing a brand in this manner is the definition of blatant bias. Question nowadays is not which reviewer is for sale but how much they are asking. Let's face it, Microsoft's got the deepest pockets by far and the effect of all that money shows up over and over again.

The biggest and most obvious downgrade is the polygon count.

The buildings have far less polygons. It's amazing that they've actually redesigned some of the buildings to make them simpler.

It's really easy to see in the lowest picture. The building on the left has much simpler columns, and the roof is also very simple now. Those changes alone should drop the polygon count for that building exterior by half or more (talking from modeling experience).

O...
