I agree, I'm shocked. Alhtough it is almost unbelievable, if true, this would be a huge blow to the Playstation brand. I understand that Sony came to the game with multiple sku's to set up with MS, but to go backwards is really strange. If anything, why not leave the best system on the market and then, through production means, reduce the cost? Or keep the best sytem on the market, include software emulation and reduce ports? Something doesn't sound right. Sony has never downgraded their tech...

I agree. And I think the irony extends further into the article. I'm not taking sides, but by saying things like Blu-Ray doesn't feature PIP yet, or that HD-DVD is a complete spec sounds great, but the whole picture is not there. First and foremost, PIP is already offered via firmware update for most Blu-Ray stand alone players. The PS3, as anounced by Sony will be compliant by the end of the year. Second, HD-DVD is not Complete Spec. The early adopters will not be able to play the new triple...

But in all honesty, the post doesn't really add anything new. Yes, Naughty Dog is owned by Sony, so that almost automatically knocks out the possibility of this game coming to the X360. Then the article goes to say that load-free times are possible with a hard drive, which not all X360's have. Also, they claim that it would be a a different game if it were ported. So what's the point of your post?

Edit - @ Mighty Boom
I have to agree in some part. I understand that this ...

I have to disagree. Not because some of things you are saying are untrue, but because you are looking at just a tiny snapshot of the gaming industry. First and foremost, the PS3 is not doing bad. Sales are consistent with X360 first year sales. However people expected the PS3 to sell out everywhere and that's why most people are complaining about the PS3. It's apparent, this generation, that consoles are not going to fly off the shelves, like in the past. People are more conscious of the prod...

I had made a similar post above. The reason why most people equate Sony with BR is the PS3. It is a video game solution and a BR solution for less than any other BR player. Also, Sony is single handedly driving BR sales. People often forget that PS3 games are also on BR format. Each game sold = a BR disk sold. That's a substantial amount of BR disks in the market. Sony has a double stake in this situation, and as a result are considered the frontrunner for the BR camp. If BR succeeds, Sony's ...

I completely agree. Although I have not chosen sides on this issue, this writer's metality is very strange. First of all, Sony is not the only Blu-Ray supporter. Neither are the studios. There are many technology companies that are stake holders in the Blu-Ray camp. So for him to argue solely agaisnt Sony seems a bit strange. Also, He claims "as a relatively conscientious consumer of technology, I simply cannot get onboard with that philosophy on winning people over through force." ...

Honest Question: Are there actual hardware sales figures from both camps?

@ gunmetal - Thanks for the post.

Very interesting to see a movie/film trade magazine covering video games.

Exactly. Someone send these people the code to Resistance:Fall of Man and Warhawk. They seriously left this stuff out? I'm baffled.

I agree. This would have also extended the life cycle of the product immensely. Not to mention the implications it would have had on the format war. Blu-Ray is ahead right now, not only because of movies, but becuase PS3's games are on BR. With these specs for an Xbox, the arguement wouldn't have been only for Sony when it came to the power and specs of the console. The X360 would have been out the gate with cutting edge specs. But the problem would have been the price. A system, like the one...

I agree. This generation has been driven primarily on price. As you said this seems most likely as a X720, not a X360. The inclusion of HD-DVD along with the other features would force this product to a very high price at the current time. This is not in MS's favor. But as you mentioned, once the cost these features decreases, then it will justify itself at a lower price. Also, even if they include the HD-DVD player this gen, they will not be able to utilize it as a gaming format, since it wi...

You know what, You're Right. But the question is, how can a company be chastised for trying to provide the consumer with what the consumer have demanded? The consumer demanded a price cut and Sony gave them one. Please explain to me how this is bad? And please don't hit me with the arguement that BC means a whole lot to the people. If it meant so much, then they would either pay for it, just like eveyone else has, or keep there PS2, just like millions have. So again, how can an affordable ver...

Exactly! I couldn't agree more. Frankly, I'm a bit frustrated to hear this kind of news. This is the first time, as far back as I can remember, that I hear people complain on every little move a company has made. What does Sony owe the industry? They have provided almost 15 years of great gaming experience, and for some reason, people feel that Sony has to give them all for nothing. Every corner Sony has turned, they have been bashed (and hard at that). They provided the most cutting edge co...

Are you being sarcastic or serious? This is actually a great move on Sony's part. They have not sold out on the chips, they are just selling the facilities that make the chips and will now contract the production out to Toshiba. From a business standpoint, this is fantastic. Sony will recoup the cost of the facility plus fix the cost on future Cell and RSX chips. This has a tendency of reducing future costs. If you live in the US, you know that most American companies otusource to China, etc....

Read my post 6.1 above - explains everything regarding this issue.

@ getrdone

Technically Yes. MS can use cell for future Xbox systems. However, this techology was developed for Sony by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba. Therefore they would have to buy the chips from IBM, Sony and Toshiba. It's just like and Intel/AMD chip being used in both HP computers and Dell computers. Each company buys from the manufacturer/owner of the product. I think your concern is that you think thi...

I completely agree. This is Sony's way of clearing 60Gb stock. However, in regards to BC, I'm not entirely convinced that Sony will not provide a solution to the 40Gb. Sony's mantra has always been to release hardware and than compliment it months later with a solution favorable to the consumer. They have always held the stance that "we have heard the customers and have decided to offer what customer wants." They did this with the release of the PS3 hardware, multiple firmware, and ...

I agree. Although most people are stating that BC is not possible on the 40Gb system. I'm not entirely convinced. I think the Sony is simply employing this tactic to clear out stock on the 60Gb model outside the US. Also, this may be the last holiday season where Sony puches the PS2. Thereofre, they are probably making one last push on the PS2 to start the phase out. The US already has the 80Gb version and it seems that the 40/80Gb models are going to be standard now. Once the 60Gb is gone, I...

Although your point may make sense, it doesn't account for the whole picture. Basically, you are saying that if 10 people bought HD-DVD (these are just hypos) and they each bought 5 HD-DVD disk, the attach rate is higher than if there are 100 BR-player owners that each bought 1 disk each. I agree, the attach rate is higher. However, attach rate does not show the whole picture. Also, you are only factoring movies, which lacks one huge element. This report is only discussin movie sales, but mos...

It is not counting the PS3. The problems with these numbers are that they are very easy to skew in the direction you want it to favor. I'm not favoring any side but if the numbers, as a whole are to be looked at, the PS3 and the X360 HD-DVD add-on must be included in total sales. They are fully functioning BR and HD-DVD players, respectively. However the story does not end there. The reason the HD-DVD camp does not want to include the PS3 in the number is not simply for BR players sold, but b...

I completely agree. Also to add to your point, the PS3 exclusively utilizes BR for all purposes. People ask PS3 owners, "how often do you use your PS3 for BR?" The simple answer is, everytime they what a BR movie AND every time they play a PS3 game. Every game sold = a BR disk sold. People are consistently focused on using the PS3 for movies, however, the PS3 uses BR for gaming, which is largely significant. The PS3 is not only driving sales of BR players and movies, but they are la...
