And that's only because the western actors Sega roped in seemed wholly intent on dismantling all the good work done with their wretched, out-of-place performances: they just couldn't give proceedings any gravitas. Otherwise there's nothing wrong with the game per se. But a game so focused on plot and story-telling can't get away with what most other games could.
And that is why 2 and 3 are superb. They offer nothing but the finest vocal...
Hideo Kojima take note; THAT is how you construct, not just an endurable cut-scene, but an entertaining one too.
I enjoyed every moment of getting the platinum for installment 3. Well, nearly every moment. Golf and Koi-Koi were a colossal trial that would make even Chuck Norris himself collapse in a puddle of his own tears and faeces.
I'm glad Sega are shaking things up a bit for number 4. With 4 playable characters the story is more of an ensemble now. Good good.

When I was younger I would often spend far more time whackin' it all night rather than playing games. Having an all nighter with a game would fry my brain, whereas...well y'know, whackin' it doesn't take much grey matter.
