Came here to just say that. FF has been completely Westernized to its detriment. Bring back turn-based. Bring back huge, expansive worlds, not just one or two large maps. Lovable, quirky characters and WEIRDNESS.
Love the console peasants downvoting you.
Sorry, but Lavos sucks. It has no personality, no motivation, just some alien that consumes worlds.
Square-Enix and a half-assed PC port??? Say it ain't so!
So nudie mods in zero-G? Count me in! ;)
It's ruined Final Fantasy. The last few entries have had KH derivative gameplay, which is a bad thing. Strategy has gone out the window. It killed the turn-based foundation, regardless how 7R wants to fake it. As for narrative? Gone are the lovable, quirky, unique characters, replaced by uncharismatic blahs.
It's ironic and sad that the series that revolutionized gaming (FF) became a cheap imitation of a series it inspired.
A potato from 20 years ago could run SNES emulation just fine. Not sure what you're on about...
Why great 10 years on??? Mods. That simple.
Literally just wrote this on PC Gamer just a minute ago. Series has really lost its way. People don't just wax nostalgic about 1-10 because memories. They were objectively great games with lovable, unique characters, epic stories, great combat and mechanics. They had heart and just the right amount of levity and weirdness.
Nomura has bastardized the franchise and corporate incompetency has really ruined it. It's been diluted and watered-down for the masses, which means n...
Great write-up! I've always found it funny when people complain about linear games. Have they never watched a movie, read a book, listened to an album? This article is point-on. It allows developers to really add intricate detail, flesh out specific characters and story. I really wish more games would go back to linearity and less fluff.
Damn right. Anything below 60fps is so jarring after PC gaming for years. PS4 was the first Playstation gen I completely skipped thanks to the lousy frames. Glad the newer consoles have finally got some CPU power. Hopefully 60fps becomes commonplace like it was decades ago.
For the time it was mind-blowing. Still an excellent intro and my all-time fave game.
It's very memorable, and an excellent intro, but I gotta go with FF7. Seeing the panning shot of Midgar, the zoom in with alternating train shots, and then the music picks up. Cloud jumps off the train and all hell breaks loose. Goosebumps! You knew you were in for a hell of a ride from the get-go.
I'd put 10, then 8, as the next best. Regardless, I miss those days when new FF would come out and you already knew it was a masterpiece.
15 was awful. The story was lousy, the world generic and the fighting mindless.
Game was shite! Gameplay was shite! Story was shite! If this is the new direction for FF, then myself- and many others, are going a different direction.
NBA Jam for me. Seeing those "big" heads that looked just like the player. My mind had never been so blown!
Guess you've never heard of Skyrim.
I always wanted to buy Phantasy Star 4 but it was something like $85 and little me could never afford it. Just had to rent it like 4x in a row to beat it. $20 was doable as a kid. With inflation, these games would be $130+.
X was pinnacle combat for the entire Final Fantasy series. Sadly it's all been downhill since.
WCW/NWO World Tour and Wrestlemania 2000 were peak wrestling games. Back when wrestling was at the top of pop culture, everyone in school would watch. The gameplay is phenomenal and create your own characters opened up the door to WCW vs WWF. What a time!
