The rational is pretty clear. letsplayers/youtubers are advertising/promoting the games they cover. I know this because I own a Wii U, and would never had bought it if it weren't for letsplayers showing what a fun system it could be. Everything nintendo showed me turned me off of the system.

There are more costs involved with it being standalone, such as shipping/freight, and packaging. That is probably what accounts for the increased price.
the games do start it just takes longer. I had the problem with last of us (disk). Black screen. closed app. tried again and just waited to see what happend. booted up in a couple of minutes.
edit: tried with some digital games. those seemed to hang forever. I signed out of psn and they started immediately.

most of the prices do break down to $2 a day or less, from what I can see. The F1 game for example is $11.99 for seven days.
A lot of fuss has been made about the ps now pricing, mainly based on how ridiculous the 4 hour fees are. and they are ridiculous. and publishers/sony know they're ridiculous. The lower tier/smallest time frame pricing of services like this always sucks, because they want you to see the value of paying more.

It doesn't matter if the game is installed on your hard drive. They kill the license for it.
They don't invest in new ips because they don't sell. Not as well as established franchises. Its a sad but true fact. Every year the biggest sellers are madden, call of duty, assassins creed, wwe,battlefield etc.
I've never bought a call of duty game. I stopped buying assaassins creed. I love football and only buy madden once every five years. But that's me, and I know people like me are not the gaming majority.

actually, I think most of their divisions are doing well or ok. They have a lot you know. Its just a few of their electronics divisions that are doing poorly.

Yes games, of course. but at this point, this early into the generation, those have yet to be proven. I know Sony's history and pedigree with delivering a multitude of great and varied exclusives. Microsoft has had very successful exclusives, but far, far fewer. I like variety. But time will tell on the games front.
