I think AngelicIce is right, Sony got caught napping - they figured the trailer would be enough. To be fair - I don't think the trailer looked good, but seeing it in motion - gameplay definitely looks good.
I wonder if the logo will rotate like PS2 back in the day. Also I think the design is to maximize thermal efficiency, I'm not sure laying it on its side would be a good thing.
I'd stick it behind the TV - or to the side, length of entertainment unit permitting.
