Yeah there's upsides and downsides to gaming and the internet. As a lifelong gamer I think the social upside the article mentions of socially incompetent people being able to connect to people online is indeed a good thing, for their moods and quality of life. The downside is that in some cases it only sustains those people, while it might have been entirely possible for them to overcome their social issues later in life if they hadn't been able to connect online so easily.

The medium doesn't influence my empathy towards the characters, it's just that I often enjoy a good story like the one in MGS, but I never have the feeling it could happen in real life so that's why I don't really get dragged into the emotions. The story itself is grand though, I enjoyed that.

I've always been a bit immune to over dramatizing games/films but I can see where author comes from.
What stays with me is stuff like when in Blood Bowl the commentator says: " I'm sure nothing will go wrong now before the end of the turn!" and your character trips down and fumbles the ball.
Or the awkward laughing scene in FFX...
Can't say i'm surprised. The gamers demographic is mainly youths and young adults, that group also happens to have the most sex, because nature. And you know, marriage destroys your sexlife and gaming equally.

I even tend to hold off on game updates for a couple of days to make sure my ps4 won't get bricked by coding mistakes.

True that. I think Christian & Muslim extremists are considerably less in numbers than most people seem to think though. Even when someone says homosexuals should be lynched or killing blacks is good, as long as they don't act on it, it's fine with me. That's the way I was raised, european culture from the 80s/90s and that's what I hang on to, because I like it best.
