There are plenty of games with 'voiceless' characters meant for the purpose of it being "you" that doesn't take away from the value of the character. Don't blame the concept that has worked in other games, blame the devs/writers for the story.
I believe the reason FF8 seems to be getting no love is because they can't find the source code.

Battlefield 4 had issues, it got fixed up nicely.
BFV Has issues, it's getting fixed up with patches and new content every couple of weeks.
Battlefront 2.. well I played it for a bit, but.. I haven't gone back to it since release.

Yeahh.. has your kid played FF7 through to 10? That was part of the magic of KH. Back when FF was stll releasing a game every year or so and we saw those characters again with a whole new story all mixed into one.
Thing is.. the first one came out like a year after Final Fantasy X. VIII and IX were all a year apart before that. Final Fantasy games were still fresh in the memory and had a huge fanbase. Now everyone who played those games as kids are now adults.. kids these days probably haven't even touched those old games now.
I waited to see if those iconic FF characters were going to make an appearance.. and they haven't. So I'll probably be avoiding it.
