You've convinced me. I change my mind.
Not cool Kevin Bao, not cool.

***"Not Sony"***
I can't get behind this ziggurcat,
Bao may well be ultimately responsible, but as a huge International corporation, Sony should have done their homework as part of their due diligence before they released the video to the public.
It wouldn't have been difficult, there's large parts of the video stolen directly from multiple creators.
Not cool Sony, not cool.

***"Hence the OPs definition of being sold in a 'bargain shop' isn't actually wrong...***
It's not the description of bargain shop that I take issue with, it's the negative connotations implied by KyRo in his descriptions of the outlet selling the consoles. I feel you know this and you're just splitting hairs.

You mean Lidl, who along with Aldi have won every prestigious food, drink and retail product award for the past three years in the UK, beating out every single one of their rivals with higher quality prod...

I agree with you that a steep discount is always going to move consoles, though I'm far more interested to hear about your theory that PS4 market saturation is a driving force behind the high volume of Xbox console sales...

@Zeref
I'm with @Christopher on this,
Certainly in the UK many services are advertised as "unlimited" but if you check the small print in the TOS you will see that many unlimited services are actually subject to a "fair use" policy that affects both the amount of data you can download and also the method you use to download it. Torrent files are subject to more stringent rules from the majority of ISP's, who as Chris quite righ...

***"Options"***
I agree with you, choice is always good. Those buyers had a choice, for whatever reason they chose to buy the version of the console without a disc drive, perhaps they are naive as your comment suggests;

Not quite the same, but this custom paint job from Colorware looks the part, modern with the OG PlayStation flare.

@IRetrouk
Having read your comments and re-read the article, I have to say I actually agree with you.
There isn't a direct correlation between sales of 'S AD and whether GP is or isn't cannibalising game sales, the data just isn't there.
@IRetrouk
***"what would gamepass have to do with these numbers?"***
Join the dots, there's a reason Sea of Thieves and Minecraft placed #4 and #5 in the UK charts this week after years on the market, and it's not because of a sudden influx in people wanting to play these games.
Look at the Sea of Thieves Bundle, what possible reason is there for someone to buy a SKU that doesn't ship with an optical drive?
Does anyone remember the Net Yaroze?
NY was a PlayStation dev kit available for sale to the public, aesthetically it looked like a standard PlayStation except it was black rather than light grey in colour, it was supplied with cables to connect to PC and development/debugging discs so users could develop and debug software they had written.
I remember my friend had one, I had the standard light grey model, I was very envious of his Net Yaroze mainly becau...

Agreed. If Game Pass and the games only available on Xbox don't interest you and you're not looking for a 4K blu-ray player but still looking to buy a console, PlayStation 4 Slim is probably the best way to go.

So I should buy an X over the S and SAD because marketing support?

***"This close to the end of the gen, buying anything under the x will be a waste of your money"***
Why do you think it is a waste of money to buy a console at the end of a generation?
You have a full generations worth of games to play, if you bought a console at the start of the generation you would have had to wait seven years to have the same catalogue of games to choose from.
If someone has wait...

***"This goes for xbox owners too"***
Absolutely agree with you, this generation I've done most of my gaming on Xbox One, PC and Switch, I bought a Pro for the exclusives.
Don't ask me how it happened, I've always been a PlayStation main since 1995.

***"I agree with you to an extent, but the person responsible for the plagiarism is Bao, not Sony. Sony did the right thing by pulling the ad"***
I agree, Sony did do the right thing by pulling the ad as soon as the issue became apparent, I also agree that it was ultimately Bao's fault, It's unfortunate as Sony will undoubtedly feel the heat for Bao's wrongdoing.
