I think the incremental damage was to make sure the drivers (gamers) focused on driving, and not crashing their cars allover the place
(we know, the second you give people very good damage, they'll just want to crash the car for an hour and miss the point of the game)
so I think it was a way of Yamauchi saying "Focus on driving, drive a lot, and once you've shown you really want GT5 for the driving expe...

then went back there now, 2010...with a better camera, drove THE SAME CAR...on THE SAME TRACK.

remember, GT5 caters to specific people, tens of millions of them, but over all specific.
its almost...an acquired taste...you either love it to death, or just enjoy it.
who ever sees GT5 as a failure fails as a gamer.

i'd say it depends on the game
some multiplats are great! yet other games are best remained exclusive to the platform
i like them both =) but exclusives matter a lot, especially when you consider their quality.
in this case, obviously make it exclusive.
