For me it was just about the fact that I knew I would want one come March when inFAMOUS came out anyway.
I figured I might as well get it at launch just so that I could say I did, if nothing else.

Honestly, it seems like a great way to make a controller be VERY expensive for very little gain. lol
I think the point is that each button would have a display on it that could change.
So you throw in a new game, and the buttons change to display what they do for that new game.
Instead of having to go to options and look up the control scheme, you look down at the controller and see the icon for jump, reload, etc...
What if it is a Vs. mode where a bunch of people play as regular soldiers against one or two guys with super powers?

I don't agree with the choice of the Dom and Maria moment.
Dom sacrificing himself in the third game was far more of a tearjerker.
The main thing to keep in mind is how much they expect the system to be running.
People run their old game consoles, then switch them off to watch TV. This thing stays on all the time, even when switching to TV.
In some households, depending on work schedules, I bet the XB1 stays on from the moment the first person wakes up to whenever the last person goes to sleep.
I think that is why they designed it with so much open space for cooling.
I'm not talking about Dual analogs, because the right stick is fine. I'm just talking about the left stick.
Nintendo was first with their analog stick on the 64, and although the controller was super odd, when you were holding it by the center handle to use the stick, it was in the upper position in relation to your thumb.
GameCube, Saturn 3d, Dreamcast, Xbox.... All in the upper or "primary" position.

The PS4 would have an ever bigger lead if it had any advantage besides a little bit of potential graphics power.
